{"id":342,"date":"2022-07-21T10:22:47","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T17:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakecountycrisiscenter.org\/?page_id=342"},"modified":"2024-01-04T15:08:41","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T23:08:41","slug":"elder-abuse-persons-with-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lakecountycrisiscenter.org\/?page_id=342","title":{"rendered":"Elder Abuse and Persons With Disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Elder Abuse is a silent problem that robs seniors of their dignity, security, and in some cases, cost them their lives.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Up to five million older Americans are abused every year, and the annual loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least $36.5 billion.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>What is Elder Abuse?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elder abuse includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, neglect and abandonment. Perpetrators include children, other family members, and spouses&#8211;as well as staff at nursing homes, assisted living, and other facilities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Physical abuse<\/mark><\/strong> means inflicting physical pain or injury upon an older adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Sexual Abuse<\/mark><\/strong> means touching, fondling, intercourse, or any other sexual activity with an older adult, when the older adult is unable to understand, unwilling to consent, threatened, or physically forced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Emotional abuse<\/mark><\/strong> means verbal assaults, threats of abuse, harassment, or intimidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Confinement <\/mark><\/strong>means restraining or isolating an older adult, other than for medical reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Passive neglect<\/mark><\/strong> is a caregiver&#8217;s failure to provide an older adult with life&#8217;s necessities, including, but not limited to, food, clothing, shelter, or medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Willful deprivation<\/mark><\/strong> means denying an older adult medication, medical care, shelter, food, a therapeutic device, or other physical assistance, and exposing that person to the risk of physical, mental, or emotional harm&#8211;except when the older, competent adult has expressed a desire to go without such care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Financial exploitation<\/mark><\/strong> means the misuse or withholding of an older adult&#8217;s resources by another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are the abusers of older adults?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Abusers are both men and women.<\/mark><\/em> In almost <kbd><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">60%<\/mark><\/kbd> of elder abuse and neglect incidents, the perpetrator <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">is a family member.<\/mark><\/strong> Two thirds of perpetrators are adult children or spouses. Approximately<strong> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">1 in 10 Americans aged 60+<\/mark><\/strong> have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as five million elders who are abused each year. One study estimated that <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">only 1 in 24 <\/mark><\/strong>cases of abuse are reported to authorities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>What are possible signs of abuse?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emotional &amp; Behavioral Signs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Unusual changes in behavior or sleep<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Fear and Anxiety<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Isolated or not responsive<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Sadness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical Signs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Broken bones, bruises, and welts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Cuts, sores or burns<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Torn, stained or bloody underclothing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Sexually transmitted diseases without clear explanation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Missing daily living aids (glasses, walker, and medications)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Financial Signs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Unusual changes in bank account or money management<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Unusual or quick changes in a will or other financial documents<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Fake signatures on financial documents<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Unpaid bills   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*If you or someone you know is a victim of elder abuse\/persons with disabilities you can contact us at 541-947-2449 and speak with an advocate today.
